When you get a letter from the IRS asking you to pay, what do you do?

Do you put it back on the shelf to deal with later? Do you just take a deep breath and pay it, even though you might not fully understand what it is?

Or do you have a trusted advisor who will look over it for you, explain it, and determine whether you really need to pay?

Let me tell you something: you should never, ever pay a bill from the IRS without fully understanding what it is for. The IRS is a government agency, but it is staffed by human beings and human beings make mistakes!

Client Jane Bell came to me recently with a $2860 IRS penalty fee from a previous business in 2013. Yes, they sent her a penalty fee from three years ago! (And by the way, did you know that you can amend and correct your taxes from up to three years ago? I have saved many clients money this way).
